The Springfield Series
Because even in a small town, everyone has a story to tell
The Long December
The Heart of the Story
The Long December began in 2010 as a 50,000-word NaNoWriMo challenge. After the marathon of writing, the manuscript was printed, tucked away, and largely forgotten for over a decade. It wasn’t until the summer of 2024 that I rediscovered those pages in a drawer. Reading it again sparked a new flame; I knew these characters—and the town of Springfield—deserved to finally have their story told. What followed was a season of “editing hell,” retyping every word, and a steep learning curve in self-publishing, but bringing this debut to life has been the ultimate labor of love.

What happens when the cost of holding things together becomes too high?
In the quiet suburbs of Springfield, Wisconsin, Emma navigates the stifling expectations of her toxic in-laws with a single mantra: “Do not engage. Keep the peace. Survive the day.” As she balances the final milestones of her oldest son’s senior year of college and her youngest son’s senior year of high school, the facade of their family life begins to fracture under the weight of manipulation and systemic neglect.
What begins as a bittersweet chronicle of a “year of lasts” transforms into a gripping drama of self-preservation. Amidst a web of family secrets and power plays, Emma must decide what- and who- is worth saving before the clock runs out on the life she thought she knew.
